April and David’s Starlit SoirĂ©e | Bella Mina, Alabama wedding photography

July 5, 2010

April and David were married on June 5 at Mitchell Plantation in Bella Mina, Alabama. For those of you unfamiliar with the area, Belle Mina is a quaint little town sweetly tucked away between Decatur and Madison. Every time someone said “Mitchell Plantation”, I kept thinking of the author of Gone With the Wind, Margaret Mitchell! The house isn’t quite as impressive as Tara, but it is located on a 450 acre cotton plantation.

April and David tried something we don’t often see at weddings–they held their outdoor ceremony and reception at night! The two opted not to see one another before the exchanging of vows, so we spent our time pre-wedding shooting the individuals and groups (groomsmen and bridesmaids), and also dodging a pretty serious (and random!) rain shower. Luckily, the rain cleared up before guests were scheduled to arrive, and everyone got to glimpse a rainbow.

Megan & Brent’s Wonderful Workplay Wedding | Birmingham Wedding Photographers

June 29, 2010

As we pulled into Birmingham exactly one month ago and saw the Workplay Theatre and the fabulous urban walls around the area, we knew this would be a wonderful wedding before even stepping foot in the door. And seeing the smiley, happy faces of Brent and Megan on their wedding day just added to our excitement. The happy couple rented a limo so we could go to various places around Birmingham to get even more fun photos! We drove by Renaissance Records and I (Ashley) knew it would be a perfect spot for some smoochy shots in the cozy store.

Megan and Brent had a lot of sweet touches and DIY projects (including a cupcake tree!) and we loved that they wrote their own vows. For favors they handed out tiny plants! I love being able to watch my plant and know that it’s growing just like their love! It was wonderful being a part of their intimate affair and getting to capture such sweet memories! We wish them a Happy One Month Anniversary!

Brittany and Baron’s sweet St. John’s Wedding | Huntsville, Alabama photographers

June 28, 2010

Brittany and Baron were married on May 28 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Madison, Alabama, with a reception at the Roundhouse (which is part of the historic Huntsville Depot) in Huntsville. This wedding was especially fun for us because several people we have known for years (including the groom!) were either in the party or in attendance, so it was also a mini-reunion!

After the ceremony, Brittany and Baron invited everyone to a super stylish reception at the Depot, which featured a special drink–The Brittini! Everyone danced like (awesome) fools and had a great time.

Thanks to Brittany and Baron for having us, and we wish you guys many more happy anniversaries!!

Melanie and Jonathan’s Constitution Village Wedding | Huntsville Alabama Wedding Photographers

June 22, 2010

Melanie and Jonathan were married exactly one month ago today, and as usual, we want to celebrate by blogging their wedding!

The wedding took place at the Constitution Village in Huntsville, Alabama. For those of you unfamiliar with the area (I had never been!), Constitution Village is part of the Early Works Museum complex–this also includes the Huntsville Depot and the Children’s Museum. Side-note from Ashley: I actually went to Constitution Village on a school field trip and had a blast! I’ve been obsessed with the place ever since. I don’t think the 4th grade me would have even thought that the future would hold the thrill to capture such a lovely wedding there!

Constitution Village is truly historical in that, according to the website, it is here that “Forty-four delegates of the constitutional convention gathered here in a vacant cabinet shop on July 5, 1819, to organize Alabama as the 22nd state. John Boardman’s print shop, Clement Comer Clay’s law office, the Federal Land Surveyor’s office, a post office and sheriff Stephen Neal’s residence surround that cabinet shop.” So, as you can tell, this is a pretty cool place to have a wedding!

The reception took place at the Summit at Big Spring Park, which is also in downtown Huntsville, and WAS a place that neither Ashley or I had been to before. This group definitely brought the funk, flavor, and FUN to the party, and it made for a pretty stellar post-wedding celebration.

A White Wedding: Katie & Billy’s Mountaintop Marriage | Huntsville, Alabama Wedding Photography

June 8, 2010

As Billy Idol’s voice echoed through the trees that night exactly one month ago I (Ashley) smiled at what we were lucky enough to witness…and capture. I thought to myself “it was a nice day for a White(/Davis) wedding.” Anyone who was atop Burritt Mountain that day saw the magic of Katie and Billy’s wedding. Two souls coming together surrounded by their friends and family. The day started with a family-only ceremony inside the rustic, intimate chapel built in 1884. After the knots were tied and the kiss exchanged, it was an afternoon of music, fun, lawn games, friends, and love. We couldn’t have asked for a better way to spend the afternoon celebrating and capturing Katie and Billy.

Wedding: Mary Lee + Steven | Vintage Birmingham Wedding Photography

May 17, 2010

Mary Lee and Steven were married exactly one month ago today–April 17–at the Aldridge Gardens in Birmingham! So we thought it would be fun to celebrate their one month anniversary with a blog post dedicated to them and their sweet wedding splendor (though internet-savvy blog followerss may have noticed the sneak peek we posted on Wedding Chicks yesterday).

The wedding was INCREDIBLY detail-heavy, and you can read more about each feature of the day below the images.

Groom’s Cake: Cindy Gaffin (mother of the groom!)–Carrot cake is typically the Gaffin family Christmas tradition, but Cindy made an exception this year since it is Steven’s absolute favorite. The tartan and crest are symbols from the family clan, MacFie.

Wedding Cake: Julie Hendrick of Sweet Magnolia (Birmingham). The cake was cut with a Marshalltown trowel, an iconic symbol within the archaeological community.

The bottles are from the couple’s own collection that was recently started because of Mary Lee’s interest in historical archaeology and Steven’s interest in glass blowing.

Bridal Gown: David’s Bridal (Birmingham)

Tuxedos: Mr. Burch Formalwear (Hoover).

Bridesmaids and Flower Girl Dresses: Susan Glass (mother of the bride). Susan also crocheted Mary Lee’s garter (a pattern from the 1800s) and embroidered her name and wedding date on her handkerchief and bridal gown. A locket holding photos of the bride’s grandmothers was wrapped around her bouquet. Mary Lee was named for her grandmothers Marion and Leona.

First Look Quilt: Mabel Lane Glass, a cousin of the bride’s paternal grandfather, at least 40 years ago.

Wooden Printing Blocks, Guestbook, and Earrings: Etsy

Get Away Car: 1952 Ford Customline which was provided by George Brasher, a long-time friend of the bride’s family.

Signpost: The signpost was made by the couple and the bride’s parents the weekend before the wedding. Steven and Mary Lee salvaged wood for the signs from an old abandoned property. Most of the pieces came from an old fence and the “Welcome” sign was part of a drawer. Steven cut the wood to point at one end and painted them with a lime whitewash. Steven, Mary Lee, and her mother painted the different signs with black oil paint.

Hairstyling: Debbie Hertzfeldt of The Hair Saloon (Huntsville). Debbie also styled Mary Lee’s hair for her bridal portraits.

Engagement Ring & Wedding Bands: Bromberg’s (Birmingham)

Floral Design: Andy Hopper (of Kathy G and Company)

Catering: Natalie Andrews (of Kathy G and Company)

Instrumental Guitarist: Paul Hicks

DJ: Chris “Fuzzy” Peters

Wedding: Karen + Daniel | Alabama wedding photography | Five hundred, twenty-five thousand, six hundred minutes..

March 24, 2010

Karen and Daniel! Where to begin?

First, if you remember, the two opted for a family-meets-engagement session that we shot in Big Spring Park a few months ago. As we said then, we knew going into this big day that Karen was going to be one of the most chill brides we’ve worked with, but I don’t think we anticipated just how relaxed she would be! While she definitely had the wedding-day jitters, complete with shaking hands, she also happily jammed to her Black Eyed Peas while getting ready, and had one request for her photos–”Give me something different!”

The wedding was at the Chestnut Grove Methodist Church in Gurley, Alabama–waaaaay out there! Luckily, with all of the love and excitement that the whole party experienced on the day, we had plenty to work with!

We edit each photo individually, and like to let the magic of the editing process unfold as we work through the session or wedding. I think Karen and Daniel’s wedding definitely displays this wonderfully–we love to provide our clients with a variety of photo styles that suit what’s happening in each moment. This also helps avoid any stagnation or repetition in shots and style!

Ashley and I BOTH cried during the ceremony! From the opening of “Seasons of Love” to the vow exchange, we were emotional wrecks. Karen and Daniel wrote their own vows, which moved us even more than we expected.

We love capturing the bride and groom right after the ceremony–look at the love!

Wedding: Sara & Jeremy | Birmingham, AL Wedding Photography

March 3, 2010

We shot Sara and Jeremy’s fantastic record store engagement session a few weeks ago and have been looking forward to their wedding ever since! I don’t think Ashley and I could have dreamed up all of the great details these two put into their day! It was truly a day filled with wonder, beauty, and love. We’re so incredibly happy for these two as they begin their life together.

Adrienne and Sammy’s Snowy-White Wedding | Alabama wedding photography

January 12, 2010

We were SO incredibly excited to wake up January 8 to a world filled with snow! Of course, we were delighted because snow is beautiful, but super excited because we knew that our bride of the day, Adrienne, was hoping for a truly white wedding. As you know, we’re in Alabama, so the odds were stacked against the South Dakota native. However, the snow came through for her, and we took full advantage of all of its splendor–as you can see, the snow bled its way into quite a bit of the post-processing! Sammy and Adrienne’s romantic wedding ended as a dance party among friends and family. Our personal friends were the DJs (Travis and David, whom are available if you’re interested in real music – and not the chicken dance – at your wedding) and they kept the good tunes spinning…that’s right, with real records! Sing alongs, dance offs, celebratory cigars, and lots of love warmed the hearts on this snowy Alabama evening here in the Rocket City.

snow & a ladybug! how lucky!

There are not enough words to describe how fantastically funny Adrienne and her ladies are! They braved the chilly temperatures to take photos for us, and I think they ended up having a good time.

We weren’t allowed to get too close during the ceremony, but our vantage point was a beautiful one–look at the candles! The dimly lit sanctuary at Good Shepherd Catholic Church glowed with the love shared between these two.

Meet the Peeples | Birmingham, Alabama | Sparks of Love

January 2, 2010

I have known Alicia since high school, and I feel honored to have been able to capture one of the most important days of her life…as she marries the man of her dreams. Alicia and Brandon were wed on a chilly December evening, with a very intimate ceremony, with only 30 people. Although the air outside was brisk, inside was radiating with love and warmth. Smiles all around as the two were united as one. After the gorgeous ceremony, more friends and family were awaiting the entrance of the lovely couple at the Sheraton in downtown Birmingham. As Mr. and Mrs. Peeples glided through the room, their love illuminated around them. Thanks so much Alicia for entrusting me to not only be one of the selected to witness your marriage, but to be able to provide you with the memories that will live on forever.
