Phil & Ingrid’s Musician Portraits

March 3, 2010

Phil and Ingrid have been performing at and supporting Lowe Mill for a long time. When they contacted us looking to do some promotional shots for the various shows they play throughout the year, I was ecstatic! I (Ashley) shot this session while Stephanie was in Hawaii soaking up the sun rays with her lovely family! I met Phil and Ingrid at their home in Five Points to snap some shots before moving on to our home-away-from-home…good ol’ Lowe Mill. You can actually catch Phil performing with one of his groups, Zapatos Perdidos, this Saturday (March 6th) at the Flying Monkey (which is located on the second floor of Lowe Mill).

Adrienne and Sammy’s Snowy-White Wedding | Alabama wedding photography

January 12, 2010

We were SO incredibly excited to wake up January 8 to a world filled with snow! Of course, we were delighted because snow is beautiful, but super excited because we knew that our bride of the day, Adrienne, was hoping for a truly white wedding. As you know, we’re in Alabama, so the odds were stacked against the South Dakota native. However, the snow came through for her, and we took full advantage of all of its splendor–as you can see, the snow bled its way into quite a bit of the post-processing! Sammy and Adrienne’s romantic wedding ended as a dance party among friends and family. Our personal friends were the DJs (Travis and David, whom are available if you’re interested in real music – and not the chicken dance – at your wedding) and they kept the good tunes spinning…that’s right, with real records! Sing alongs, dance offs, celebratory cigars, and lots of love warmed the hearts on this snowy Alabama evening here in the Rocket City.

snow & a ladybug! how lucky!

There are not enough words to describe how fantastically funny Adrienne and her ladies are! They braved the chilly temperatures to take photos for us, and I think they ended up having a good time.

We weren’t allowed to get too close during the ceremony, but our vantage point was a beautiful one–look at the candles! The dimly lit sanctuary at Good Shepherd Catholic Church glowed with the love shared between these two.

Adrienne’s dramatic & elegant bridal at Lowe Mill | Alabama wedding photography

January 10, 2010

Adrienne’s bridal was originally planned to be outside, in a beautiful part of downtown Huntsville we’ve discovered recently. However, fate and/or the weather were working against us, or at least redirecting us, so we ended up shooting the session at the ever-fabulous and unique Lowe Mill.

We shot Adrienne and Sammy’s beautiful, snow-day wedding this past Friday, and are looking forward to sharing it with you in a couple of days!

Adrienne brought her dog, Dakota, to the shoot!

Sweet Sunshine-y Family Goodness | Huntsville, Alabama family photography

December 7, 2009

We recently met the sweetest family! This is the kind of session that really proves that love is the best thing one can hope for. This trio was completely bursting with affection for each other, and their energy was definitely contagious! I don’t think Ashley or I stopped smiling the entire time we were shooting.

Engaged: Kelsey and Trey | White Rabbit Studios | Love, love me do.

November 4, 2009

Kelsey and Trey met in the parking lot of a gym, and had their first date on February 15–the day after Valentine’s Day, to take the pressure off!–at a Mexican restaurant. The two are now planning their wedding, and we wanted to incorporate their first date into their engagement session if at all possible.

We began the session at Lowe Mill, our base of operations, and moved to the local Mexican restaurant Bandito Burrito. Bandito is one of our favorite places, so we were definitely happy to shoot there–dinner followed! It’s also a funky local joint, which we feel goes with our photography style quite nicely.

Kelsey and Trey are a great couple, and very in sync with one another. They are complementary souls–both sweet and easy to work with! We had a great time with these two loves.

Wedding: Davonna + Rob at the Huntsville Museum of Art | White Rabbit Studios | Vow Renewal

October 13, 2009

You might remember Davonna, Rob, and their daughters, Dallas and Dakota, from their family session a few weeks back. Well, last Saturday we shot their absolutely gorgeous vow renewal ceremony. The two have been married for five years, and, to paraphrase Davonna’s spur-of-the-moment vows, even though Rob still doesn’t put the dirty laundry in the hamper, we’re incredibly grateful that we got to share this experience with them. As two wives ourselves, we understand the commitment and patience that comes with married love, and consider these two perfect examples of all that is true and beautiful about marriage.

Wedding: Rob + Miranda at Huntsville Botanical Garden | North Alabama Wedding Photography | White Rabbit Studios

October 13, 2009

Rob and Miranda were married this past Saturday at the Botanical Gardens in Huntsville. This location was awesome for both Ashley and I as this is the location Ashley shot her first wedding, and I had never shot there before! We’re both huge fans of gardens, flowers, and nature in general, and were beyond excited that we got to capture Rob and Miranda’s big day at the gardens.

Wedding: Chirag + Nancy | Day 2 of 3 – Mameru and Garba Ceremony | White Rabbit Studios | Huntsville, AL Wedding Photography

October 13, 2009

P7313527

I blogged about the Pithi ceremony the other day, and now here’s information about Chirag and Nancy’s Mameru and Garba ceremonies that took place later in the evening!

“The custom of ‘mameru’ originated centuries ago when there were no legal rights existing for daughters. It was customary for the parents to start making provisions for their daughter by gifting her with things on occasions like ‘rakshabandhan’ or ‘bhaibheej’. These gifts accumulated as ’streedhan’ (daughter’s wealth).

When the girl grows up and gets married, the ‘mama’ or maternal uncle comes with the ‘mameru’ consisting of clothes, jewellery and other gifts items including the traditional ‘paanetar’ (silk wedding sari – usually white with red border) and ‘choodo’ (ivory bangle – now replaced with acrylic or plastic). The ‘mameru’ ceremony takes place one day before the wedding.”

As you may expect, Nancy and Chirag’s wedding had a slightly different variation on the Mameru, which featured Chirag at the center of the activities.

The Mameru ceremony was followed by the Garba. Garba is a form of Indian dance that has roots in the Gujarat region (the ancient Indus Valley), “is more similar to Western folk dance than to the presentational style of Indian classical dances such as bharatanatyam and odissi” (thank you, Wikipedia! ;D).

“The name garba comes from the Sanskrit term Garba (”womb”) and Deep (”a small earthenware lamp”). Many traditional garbas are performed around a central lit lamp. The circular and spiral figures of Garba have similarities to other spiritual dances. Traditionally it is performed during the nine-day Hindu festival Navarātrī (Gujarātī નવરાત્રી Nava = 9, rātrī = nights). Either the lamp (the Garba Deep) or else an image of the Goddess Amba is placed in the middle of concentric rings as an object of veneration.

People dance around the center as if they are horse racing, bending sideways at every step, their arms making sweeping gestures, each movement ending in a clap.
The Dandiya Raas dance

Modern garba is also heavily influenced by raas (Gujarātī: ડાંડીયા Ḍānḍīyā), a dance traditionally performed by men. The merger of these two dances has formed the high-energy dance that is seen today.

Both men and women usually wear colorful costumes while performing garba and dandiya. The girls and the women wear ghaghra choli, a three-piece dress with choli on the top and ghaghra as bottom, made of cotton with beads, shells, mirrors, sitars, and embroidery work, mati, jhumkas, necklaces, bindi, bajubandh, chudas and kangans, kamarbandh, payal, and mojiris and dupatta tucked in the Gujarati manner. Boys and men wear kafni pyjamas with a kediyu – a short round kurta – above the knees and pagadi on the head with bandhini dupatta, kada, and mojiris.”
