Behind the Scenes: United Record Pressing
Exactly one week ago Andy and I took a field trip to Nashville to see Black Lips live at Third Man Records (in which they will make into a vinyl album). As an added bonus, our friend Brent extended a gracious offer to give us a tour of United Record Pressing! It was better than being a kid in a candy store! Obviously Andy and I are pretty passionate about vinyl, so this was definitely a must-see for us!
We watched how it all starts with small pellets shipped in giant crates which turn into the slab of music encrypted “wax” we all love. Since Andy and I also run a record label that uses URP (and my own band’s seven inch was pressed here) it was exciting seeing how everything came together. We toured the recording studio, Motown suite, pressing plant, art department, and the distribution center. The only part we didn’t get to see was the plating department (they close earlier than the main building), which is extremely intriguing…so you can guarantee we will be making a return trip!
Thanks so much to our friend Brent for taking the time to give us such an in-depth look at an incredible process! If you’re a music lover and find yourself in Nashville, be sure to make time to stop by! United Record Pressing gives group tours on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
